iPad Pro: Release Date and Price

The iPad Pro (2024) was announced on May 7th alongside the iPad Air (2024). Pre-order now to secure your spot. Shipping commences May 15th.

As expected, this is a premium tablet with a starting price of $999 and $1,699 for the 11-inch model with 256GB of storage.

Prices increase depending on storage capacity, reaching $1,999/£1,999/AU$3,449 for the 11-inch model with 2TB of storage.

The 13-inch model starts at $1,299/£1,299/AU$2,199 for 256GB and goes up to $2,299/£2,299/AU$3,949 for the 2TB option.

Size And Design

iPad Pro: Size and Design

The iPad Pro (2024) comes in two familiar sizes: 11-inch and 13-inch. Both models are thinner than their predecessors, with the 11-inch model measuring 5.3mm and the 13-inch model coming in at an incredibly thin 5.1mm – making it the thinnest Apple product ever. Both are available in Silver and Space Black finishes and maintain the aluminum build users expect from iPads.

Display

iPad Pro: Display

The most significant design change is the display. Both sizes now sport an OLED screen, a first for iPads. This offers significant improvements over previous models, with better contrast, deeper blacks, and more detail in shadows.

Apple has even pushed the technology further by implementing a ‘Tandem OLED’ display that boosts brightness to 1,000 nits for full-screen viewing and a whopping 1,600 nits for peak HDR content. This display is called ‘Ultra Retina XDR’ and offers a 120Hz refresh rate that can adjust to 10Hz to save battery life.

The resolution is 1668 x 2420 for the 11-inch model and 2064 x 2752 for the 13-inch model, resulting in a sharp 264 pixels per inch on both.

Cameras

iPad Pro: Cameras

The iPad Pro (2024) features a 12MP f/1.8 rear camera with a LiDAR scanner and an Adaptive True Tone flash for improved document scanning. The front-facing camera has also been upgraded to 12MP with an f/2.4 aperture.

Notably, the front camera is now positioned on the long edge of the device, making it much better suited for video calls in landscape mode.

Both cameras can record video up to 4K quality, with the rear camera reaching 60fps and the front camera topping out at 1080p at 60fps.

Battery

iPad Pro: Battery

As usual, Apple doesn’t reveal specific battery capacities, but they claim both models can offer up to 10 hours of web browsing or video playback on Wi-Fi before needing a charge.

The cellular models should be able to manage up to 9 hours of web browsing on mobile data. Charging is done via USB-C.

Performance

iPad Pro: Performance

The iPad Pro (2024) boasts a powerful new M4 chipset, a significant upgrade over the M2 in the previous model. Apple promises up to 50% faster CPU performance and a staggering 4x faster GPU.

This chipset is built on a second-generation 3nm process, making it efficient while packing a 16-core neural engine capable of 38 trillion operations per second. Additionally, Apple claims a 20% improvement in thermal performance and up to 4x faster pro rendering performance compared to the iPad Pro (2022).

The M4 chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM for 256GB and 512GB storage models and 16GB of RAM for 1TB and 2TB models. The higher storage options also benefit from a 10-core CPU, while the 8GB models are limited to a 9-core CPU.

Software and Features

Software and Other Features

The iPad Pro (2024) runs iPadOS 17 and features a four-speaker sound system. It also supports the new Magic Keyboard and the new Apple Pencil Pro.

Final Thoughts

The iPad Pro (2024) is a substantial upgrade over its predecessor. The M4 chip delivers a significant performance boost, and the beautiful new OLED display is a significant improvement. The camera upgrades, slimmer design, and improved Apple Pencil support make this a compelling option for creative professionals, power users, and anyone who wants the best possible tablet experience.

However, the hefty price tag means this device is best suited for those needing its extra power and features. The iPad Air (2024) might be a better choice if you’re looking for a more affordable option.
