If you own an iPhone, there is just one big brand in smartwatches: the Apple Watch. On Android, there are considerably more alternatives, but the Google Pixel Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch are the market leaders. The Pixel Watch 2 ($349.99) has a longer battery life than its predecessor, an official IP68 dust and water resistant rating, and a more eco-friendly casing. This model also has certain noteworthy Fitbit health-tracking capabilities that the original edition lacked, such as skin temperature and stress sensors. Overall, the Pixel Watch 2 is a terrific smartwatch that looks nice and operates well, and it’s a great alternative to the Galaxy Watch 6 ($299.99), which has a shorter battery life.
Design: One Size Fits All
The Pixel Watch 2 retains its predecessor’s style and comes in a single 41mm size, as opposed to the tiny and big Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm/45mm) and Galaxy Watch 6 (40mm/44mm), however I don’t believe it looks too little on my pretty broad wrist. It comes with small and large bands and should fit wrists ranging in size from 5.4 to 8 inches. It has a similar profile to the initial Pixel Watch, measuring 0.48 inches thick, and is somewhat thicker than the 0.42-inch Apple Watch Series 9 and the 0.35-inch Samsung Galaxy Watch 6. It doesn’t feel very thick, especially with its rounded edge.
Ruggedness: You Can Dunk It
Except under the most severe situations, you should be able to wear the Pixel Watch 2. It has an IP68 designation, which means it is dustproof and water resistant for 30 minutes in up to five feet of water, and it keeps its predecessor’s 5ATM rating, which indicates it can withstand water pressure of up to 164 feet for 10 minutes. It lacks the military-grade certifications of the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2, but it can be worn when swimming, running, or mudding. Just don’t go scuba diving or water skiing while wearing it: Google says the Pixel Watch 2 is “designed to be used in shallow water and should not be used for activities involving high velocity or high temperature water.”
Battery Life: A Day and More
The Pixel Watch 2’s battery comfortably lasts the entire day and night. Battery life varies depending on settings and use, but Google claims it may last up to 24 hours with the always-on display on, much like the previous generation.
The Pixel Watch 2 outlasted Google’s stated battery life estimate in testing, lasting a solid 33 hours with the always-on display before draining to 5%. This was plenty for two nights of sleep monitoring with the screen turned off and a day of activity tracking.
Its 33-hour real-world battery life is an increase over the first model, which died after 25 hours in testing under comparable conditions. Its battery life with an always-on display is significantly longer than that of the Galaxy Watch 6 (22 hours in testing) and equivalent to that of the Apple Watch Series 9 (32.5 hours).
The Pixel Watch 2 charged completely in approximately 80 minutes using the provided charger, which I plugged into the USB connection on my keyboard.
Google’s Smartwatch, Made Better
The Pixel Watch 2 is well-built, comfortable, and performs excellently while providing significantly more battery life than its primary competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 6 has a brighter screen as well as body composition and snore-tracking functions that the Pixel Watch does not have. Both are terrific Wear OS smartwatches that fall just shy of our Editors’ Choice, the Apple Watch Series 9, which gets just as bright as the Galaxy Watch 6 while having similar always-on battery life as the Pixel Watch 2. The Apple Watch requires an iPhone to operate, so if you’re an Android user, the Pixel Watch 2 or the Galaxy Watch 6 are fantastic options depending on your requirements and tastes.
